Set of 4 batts – 2 oz. (~56g) total (0.5 oz each of color included)
85% sustainably sourced Rambouillet Merino wool 15% local milkweed floss
The Rambouillet Merino flock used to create these batts is sourced locally from Nelson, WI and is next to the skin soft. I personally visited the farm on shearing day to pick out the softest, cleanest fleeces that I heavily skirted before sending to a local mill to ensure no harsh chemicals were used that alter the structure of the wool. Because of this breed’s crimp structure and because only soap was used to wash the wool (not an acid bath) there is some VM that will fall out during spinning. These batts are very fluffy and not like the heavily processed wool you will see in most places, perfect for woolen spinning!
There is enough milkweed in this blend to feel the difference while spinning and see patches of luster in the final product. I have hand-dyed the milkweed 3 coordinating colors (gold, peach, and pink) and blended a mixture in every colored batt to provide fun pops of color! The milkweed floss is collected from local conservation groups, cleaned, and the seeds are then returned to each group for prairie restorations. Working with conservation organizations is an important part of Buchanan Fiber Co as we are providing volunteer hours that might not be fulfilled otherwise.
All colors are carefully hand-dyed in small batches and blended on my drumcarder. I’ve created these batts so you can decide how the final product will look! You can make color changes as short or long as you would like and feel free to continue blending with your favorite fibers to create one of a kind art batts.
15% of proceeds from this listing will be donated to Las Gralarias Foundation which raises funds for Reserva Las Gralarias in Mindo, Ecuador. The goal of the reserve is to protect land at varying altitudes of cloud forest habitat that would otherwise be used for agricultural purposes. I was fortunate enough to intern at the reserve for a month in 2011 and am confident that funds will be put towards much needed conservation efforts. The reserve has an abundance of amphibians, which is why all the colorways with 15% of proceeds going to Las Gralarias are reptile and amphibian inspired. Visit reservalasgralarias.com to learn more!
